Welcome to the UMMC Legal Division

Welcome to the UMMC Legal Division and Claims Department. The Legal Division provides advice and counsel to UMMC staff on all legal matters related to the Medical Center. The division is the liaison between UMMC and outside defense counsel, and assists in coordinating the provision of all legal services for UMMC as an entity. Legal services provided include contract review for all UMMC business contracts and contract-related issues. The Legal Division also defends professional and general liability claims filed against UMMC and its employees in their official capacities. Services include the review of all tort claims and the appointment, selection and direction of defense counsel.

The Claims Department provides self-insurance services for UMMC pursuant to the Mississippi Tort Claims Act and acts as the claims administrator and adjuster for all professional and general liability claims properly filed against UMMC and its employees in their official capacities. Any question regarding UMMC's Tort Claims Plan or related to claims made there under should be referred to the claims manager. This office also provides claims histories for faculty and resident physicians seeking additional or other professional liability coverage.
